Art Nouveau Project

Art Nouveau style house project. Plantelor area, Bucharest (©Valentin Mandache)

The image above shows one of the most exquisite period houses in Bucharest, undergoing a thorough specialist Art Nouveau renovation. The house structure dates from the 1900s and it was a Little Paris style dwelling. What we see now is a thorough transformation in Art Nouveau, undertaken in the last decade. It is obviously a very expensive enterprise in a city where builders’ prices are on a par with those found in London. The progress of this project seems to have been quite slow since I visited it last February, also probably because of the onset of a very serious financial and economic crisis in Romania. In the following months I intend to post some more updates about this iconic project for Romania’s capital city and its period property market.

I endeavor through this daily image series to inspire appreciation of the historic houses of Romania, a virtually undiscovered, but fascinating chapter of European architectural heritage.
