The 1717 built Rozavlea, Maramures wooden church, with its off centre bell tower and steeple. Having a stroll on the well preserved Roman road of Porolissum, at the frontier of the ancient Romania (aka the Roman Empire), in what is now the NW Transylvania. It was the equivalent of Hadrian Wall’s Vindolanda, but much larger and provided with an impressive amphitheatre. Beyond it, to the N, was the Barbaricum, what is now Maramures (the Free Dacians) and further away Ukraine (the Sarmats and Scythians). A remnant of the Neolithic protective spirit/ man, which we see in the ten millennia ago ceramic decoration, still surviving in the art of the 19th and the 20th c peasants of Maramures, as seen in the collection of the Ethnographic Museum of Sighetul Marmatiei: the first four photos are a chained protective spirit (to not run away), which was affixed on the wall of a Maramures house; the following two is a the head of a spirit decorating the pillar of a derrick well, add the last image is a protective spirit represented on a Maramures gate.
