The church of Santo Stefano, Venice, in a flowery late Gothic of very Venetian tastes, from the first half of the 15th c, provided with a wooden roof inspired from a ship’s keel, of which the Venetians were master craftsmen, which prefigures the Renaissance forms a century earlier. The light roof was necessary for insuring the stability of the building on the typical lagoon silt ground of Venice. Central Bucharest used to be quite an Arcadia until the emergence of the forced industrialisation of Stalinism in the 1950s, and what followed afterwards, including the post-communist free for all wild building developments, concreting over every piece of ground and cutting down all trees in sight.
