We had a very wintry weather in Bucharest during this time of the ‘spring’ season, with quite depressing snowstorms. Wandering on the streets during a lull between storms, I found and photographed the above exquisite Art Deco panel, which acted as an excellent remedy to the sombre state induced by the unusual weather. It depicts a cheerful explosion of foliage and flowers typical of a warmer climate, a familiar theme in the Art Deco architecture of 1930s Bucharest. I thus realised even more poignantly that longing for the serendipity of the southern seas, as shown in this rendering of luxurious vegetation, was then as obsessive among the Bucharest people as it is today.
