The design of the Art Deco style doorway presented above suggests an interesting psychedelic pattern well before its emergence in the 1960s pop art. A number of 1930s Art Deco style buildings in Bucharest display such refined motifs and decorations, as I recorded in a post last year about an exquisite decorative wall panel. It is a witness and a measure of Bucharest’s intense creative scene of those years, considered the golden age for this city, still unmatched today, after more than seven decades of devastating communist and post-communist regimes.

*Turns head sideways* Is it possible that this is a solar eclipse motif?
Very pretty, whatever it is!

Thank you for your comment Cheryl! I am not sure about the eclipse motif, it is, I think, something to do with the future imaged as an abstract interaction between machines and nature, between humans and cosmos. Bucharest had a very lively literary scene in the 1930s, where some of the main genres present in the city were the fantastic and surrealistic literatures (many among the founders of the Dadaism were from Romania, for example). I believe that the abstract thought, characteristic, of this literature, sparked a following and fashion among the Romanian visual artists and their productions, the architects being one such category. Probably the doorway presented here is the production of that wonderful and effervescent artistic scene from the inter-war period Bucharest. Valentin
