Romanian landscape seen from the train’s rear

08/07/201221/07/2012Valentin Mandache

An evocative, although apparently placid, landscape in southern Romania in the environs of Bucharest, filmed from a slow moving passenger train’s rear. The region is called the Lower Danube Prairie, similar in geography and climate with the prairie around the Great Lakes on the North American continent.

The Romantic style painting in the Black Church of Kronstadt/ Brasov, depicting the start of the Lutheran Reformation among the Saxons of Transylvania, under the guidance of the humanist Johannes Honterus, seen seated at the table. The first Protestant service took place there in 1542. The painting is by Fritz Schullerus, 1898. #johanneshonterus #honterus #balckchurch #schwarzekirche #kronstadt #brasov #saxontransylvania #transylvania #reformation #lutheranism #casedeepoca #southeasteurope #valentinmandache
This is the most complete Gothic era fresco left in the Black Church of Brasov/ Kronstadt, Saxon Transylvania, after the whitewashing of the Reformation. It was painted to celebrate the wedding of King Mathias Corvinus (who visited Brasov in his expeditions against Vlad the Impaler of Whallachia) with Beatrix of Aragon, sometimes in the 1480s, and it shows the Virgin flanked by St Catherine and St Barbara. It is probably the most accomplished painting surviving from that period in Transylvania, located in the main northern portal of the church. #gothic #gothicpainting #fresco #mathiascorvinus #transylvania #saxontransylvania #blackchurch #schwarzekirche #brasov #kronstadt #valentinmandache #southeasteurope #casedeepoca
Your expert in historic houses, feeling unhappy, in the early 1980s while conscripted in the communist and stupid army of Romania, one of the most epic time wastings of my life. #constiption #soldier #communistarmy #romania #communistromania #balkans #southeasteurope #casedeepoca #valentinmandache

1890s Little Paris style house in Buzau, southeast Romania, prepared for renovation and plastic foam insulation of the walls (read defacing or bastardisation), then abandoned (perhaps the local heritage authorities got wind of the plans of the overenthusiastic proprietors). #littleparis #labellepoque #buzau #southeasteurope #balkans #casedeepoca #valentiamdache
You don’t mess with the Saxons of Transylvania, if you were an Ottoman army. The stern faces and demeanour of the Saxon patricians of Kronstadt/ Brasov seen on a 17th c tombstone exhibited at the Black Church cathedral. They were the people of the Christian frontier, much like the Castile used to be during the Caliphate of Cordoba. #tombstone #blackchurch #schwarzekirche #kronstadt #brasov #saxontransylvania #transylvania #southeasteurope #casedeepoca #valentinmandache #frontierpeople
This past Sunday in Kronstadt/ Brasov, Transylvania, in front of one of the northern portals of the Black Church, the easternmost continental Gothic church, trying to put order in my thoughts after the recent tragic death of my mother in a car accident. This cathedral is part of my cultural universe, being first aquatinted with it in my childhood during the school trips organised by my parents, village teachers in southeastern Romania. #blackchurch #schwarzekirche #kronstadt #brasov #transylvania #gothicathedral #gothic #southeasteurope #casedeepoca #valentinmandache
Today is my birthday. In the photo, taken this past Thursday, the day of the week when I was born, I was giving a speech in the honour of my mother, in front of her coffin at her funeral service, in our village church, St Nicholas, in Glodeanu-Silistea, southeast Romania. I particularly like the fact that the church, in an interesting early Westernised architecture, was founded by a woman, the boyarina Anica Filipescu, in the 1850s, in a very conservative and patriarchal period and society. RIP our mother, Catalin and I miss you immensely! #birthday #funeral #church #glodeanusilistea #buzau #balkans #southeasteurope #casedeepoca #valentinmandache
